Home/2008 photos/Belize/Caye Caulker

a few days spent kicking back and slowing down the pace After our adventures in the jungle we were definitely ready for a few days of just pure relaxation. We returned the rental car and then grabbed a taxi to Belize City. This gave us our first view of the city, and on first glance, I wasn't too sorry that we didn't schedule much time to spend there. At the ferry terminal we waited with the masses for the next boats. They called out our destination (Caye Caulker) and we joined the mostly backpacker crowd over to the dock and onto the small boat. The ride out to the island took about an hour during which we were able to enjoy the view of the surrounding waters and islands. It really is beautiful (for a great view, check out the google maps satellite view and zoom all the way in - you can even see some of the ferry boats). Arriving on the island we could tell at once that we made a good choice. Caye Caulker is incredibly small (about 1/2 mile wide at its widest and 2 miles long?) with no pavement and no cars. Everyone walks, bikes, or takes golf carts to get around. Our hotel was located on the West side of the island affording us awesome views of the sunset, and we were adjacent to the soccer field (football pitch) so we got to enjoy not only the pickup games but also a tournament between a few Belizean towns. We spent one day snorkeling but the rest of the time was spent wandering around the island or hanging out at our hotel, which was definitely among the nicest on the island. The food was awesome - from beach prepared BBQs to semi-fine dining - the beer was cold, and the vibe was as laid back as you'd want it to be. We were sad to depart as it also brought the end to the trip. The ferry back to Belize City was just as crowded, and even though we left ourselves a few hours to check out Belize City, after 30 minutes of walking around we opted to head back to the airport early - that's how much we cared for Belize City. It was the only disappointment of the trip.
