Home/2008 photos/Belize/Birds of Belize

Everywhere we went there were different varities of birds - these are just a few photos We were really surprised by the variety of birds that we saw in Belize. I'm definitely in no way a 'birder' and neither (to my knowledge) is Meghan, but it's hard for anyone not to notice or appreciate the variety of species that abound. During our stay at the Black Rock Lodge we even got up early one morning to walk the grounds with one of the staff who pointed out several species for us - including the Toucan, which we would have been disappointed had we not seen during our stay. It was amazing actually how so many of the staff knew so much about the birds of the area - everyone seemed to take an interest in them. On the island we also saw many birds - of course different species than up in the mountains, the favorite being the frigates. These birds would fly relatively high in the sky, typically in groups, and then swing down to the water and look closely for something to eat. They proved to be tough birds to photograph though I did manage to get a few fairly close shots. It was also pretty cool seeing the birds of prey - though I'm not exactly what kind of birds they are - ospreys, hawks, or ? Needless to say, these are far from award-winning, and most of the more 'exotic' birds that we saw were not captured at all. Still, I figured I'd share a few photos..
